romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larry sabato, director of center for politics at the university of virginia. larry, historically speaking how big of a deal are the first debates really? >> well it can be a dig deal, jenna. of course governor christie was right. he got off message as you know because part of the amusing previous view to a presidential debate is the attempt by both sides to run down their own candidate. about how horrible a debater they are and the other side is so terrific. so governor christie may be committed a behalf by telling the truth. if you look historically, there is a pretty good chance that mitt romney can make up some ground. usually, not always, but usually the challenger to the incumbent just by standing on the stage and doing a credible job, can make up some ground against the incumbent. just, let me mention one

mitt romney. what do you think they're basing that on? >> i think they're basing it on past performance and the observation that they think that president obama is a pretty cool customer in the sort of scenarios. i believe that chris christie has the right answer and the reason i think chris christie has the right answer is that 35 votes, 35 states pardon me, will already be voting by the time that debate begins. so when you look at these polls, tamron, that show you the lay of the land, it's not that's what will happen on november 6th. it's that's what is happening in as many as 35 different states. he needs a game changer. >> but 37% -- i'm sorry, 52% in likely swing states right now are siding with president obama. romney at 41%. that's an average of the swing states you point out. many states i believe 30 plus, are voting right now. ohio, i believe tomorrow starts its early voting. when you look at a moment that's supposed to be, michael, a game changer, and the candidate is rehearsing zingers, as reported with "the new york times" what could change the whole momentum in 37 days? ha
performance you're going to -- the media thinks you did pretty well. again, i think romney, you know, has pretty good expectations for this debate. he can do well by standing on the stage against barack obama. but at the end of the day, you're going to have three debates but still have a lot of other things happening in the campaign and obama has a structural advantage in this race. he's been ahead and romney's got to try and catch up with him and i don't think the debates will do it for him. >> a take us if you will, behind the curtain, in the kerry campaign at this point, you were down about six points nationally which is roughly the margin where mitt romney finds himself down at this point. what's the mood inside the campaign? does it become hard to keep your spirits up? is there a danger of having sort of a gloomy mood per vads the campaign itself? >> that's always a danger and i think one of the great things that the obama campaign had four years ago is they didn't pay a lot of attention to all of this. they weren't watching all of these cable news shows and paying attention to the c
